Marrakech – Jan 2017

This was my first every trip to Africa, so was very excited. So much so I’d managed to not totally check out all the settings on my X-T1, and the night before at my brothers wedding, after a few to many shandys I’d managed to switch from my usual RAW+jpeg mode to jpeg only. I only realised this after I got back and had copied over the photos to my computer. Not only was it my first ever time not shooting RAW, I also had no idea I was doing so. I ended up using a mix of iPhone and X-T1, both shooting straight to jpeg.

Anyway, I started off my trip in the old town of Marrakech, the Medina, staying in a traditional Riad.

The Marrakech museum is a beautiful building on it’s own without the art, well worth a visit.

Montreal – April

My first time to Montreal, and I really liked the City and its residents. A fun friendly city with lots of charm and a fantastic night life, which was my main reason for going. I got to experience a totally amazing set by Ben Klock at the fantastic night club Stereo. I timed it right as this turned out to be one of my highlights when it comes to events, and I’m told one of the best nights Stereo have seen.

Now I did take my camera, but a few days of rain meant it didn’t come out too often. (Mainly me being lazy!) But did get some fun shots on the nicer days. (I did miss getting any shots of the snow!)

I really liked how downtown had grown up around the old buildings and churches, creating some really interesting vistas with really contrasting materials and designs.

Are You Listening? Festival 2016

I always love this day of music and fun. Getting to experience new bands and get to hear some great new music in some amazing venues.

Nice – Cote D’Azur

This is the first time I got to take my X-T1 out on my Travels, because I’ve not been travelling since I got it! I originally bought it to be my travel camera, but it has already become my go to camera for everything, and I’m on the verge of putting my 7D on eBay.

I only had 3 days and my plan was to do as little as possible, so days 1 & 2 were spent on the beach, and my camera in it’s bag. Day 3 I spent exploring, and headed up through old town up to the chateau.

Eastbourne Airshow 2015

A couple of weekends ago I went down to Eastbourne (for the first time ever) with the family for the Airshow, which gave me the opportunity for another day of photography well outside of my comfort zone. I’m really enjoying doing this now, as it is making me think harder about my shots. Anything that makes you do some extra thinking about photography is always a good thing!

The most suitable lens for my Fujifilm X-T1 I have for this is the XF 18-135mm lens (giving me a 216mm equivalent at the long end) so I wasn’t planning on getting any close-ups.

Also this was my first outing with the v4 firmware for the X-T1, so was looking forward to a real world testing of the new autofocus system.

I don’t think I got any amazing shots, and don’t think I’m going to become an obsessive aeroplane photographer 🙂  …but here are some of the ones I like….

So to the Airshow… this takes place over Eastbourne beach, which gives the whole thing a rather unique feel.

BBC Introducing… Summer All Day Party

Surprise attendance at the BBC Intro day party

Having spent the last few weeks manically organising, and moving house, I had one last visit to Reading to finish the task in hand last Saturday. Because my journey was taking me past Little Venice, I decided to take my X-T1 along with me for the walk. Shopping of at the fantastic Waterside Café for lunch, I spotted on Facebook that today was indeed the BBC Introducing summer day party! Result!

And what a fantastic line up of live music……

First up was Martha Roper, acoustic set outside in the glorious Reading sunshine.

X-T1 Firmware v4.00

Having had a very, very busy month or so, I’ve finally got around to getting my X-T1 upgraded to v4.00 firmware. Very excited!!!….

I am attending an Airshow this weekend with the family, which will be perfect to test out the new AF. From just pointing it at a few things in my kitchen just now, it’s lightning fast with my 35mm attached!

I’ll have more of my thoughts after really trying it out next week, I’m sure.

Brands Hatch – M4 Master

Last weekend my brother had an MSV M4 Masters driving day at Brands Hatch, a fantastic circuit that was once the home of the British Gran Prix, and still home to many fantastic racing series. This was the very first day that they had the new BMW 425bhp, twin-turbo V6 M4’s out on track for customers to drive, so I thought I’d tag along and take some photos for my brother.

This was a good chance to test out my Fujifilm X-T1 with the XF 18-135mm lens I purchased with the camera in a fantastic bundle from Jessops here in the UK. This was also a great opportunity to test out the continuous auto focus, and the continuous shooting mode of the X-T1, and compare this with my Canon 7D which is well known for its fast frames per second shooting.

Now this is not my normal photography subject, the fastest thing I’m normally trying to capture is a particularly lively guitarist, and even then I normally wait for the shot in Single Auto Focus. Shooting fast moving objects is something I probably do less than once a year, so I’m no expert in this field. In fact the last time I must have shot racing cars was back in the early 90s, as a kid, at Brands Hatch for the British Touring Cars, with my trusty (cheap) Ricoh camera (I think it was the FF-70). I expect when I got the film developed most of my shots were nice and blurry, this is at least one problem the digital era has fixed for us!

RAAYS NME photoshoot

Getting some last minute photos for local Reading band RAAYS.

I have not done a photoshoot like this for a good few years, and seemed like a great challenge. I am used to getting shots of bands performing, not promo shots for a magazine spread, but in the end it’s all for the same goal, a great photo showing off a moment in time. This is how I approached this shoot, knowing I just needed to capture the band feeling at ease and enjoying themselves, just as they would be on stage.
